Cheap Sunglasses #316
Gilbert was working on lighting for the school play and thought that he could make a cool pair of sunglasses by attaching some of the red filter film to his glasses.
He did some research and learned that 20 percent of the light passing through the filter is absorbed. He also read that good sunglasses should absorb 80 percent of the incoming light, so he figured that if he put four layers of filter film on his glasses he'd be all set.
1. Calculate the percentage of light that passes through one layer of filter film, two layers of film, three layers of film, and four layers of film. Is Gilbert right?
2. Write a formula that will calculate the percentage of light that will pass through n layers of filter film.
3. Use your formula to calculate what percentage of light will pass through 20 consecutive layers of filter film.
Extra: How many layers of film would it take for no light at all to pass through? Explain your thinking.

A Pound of Tea

Jonathan and Hazel love to drink tea. When they are both at home, a pound of tea lasts two weeks. Occasionally Hazel visits her mother in Australia. It takes six weeks for Jonathan alone to use up a pound of tea.
How long should a pound of tea last Hazel if she were alone?
Remember to explain how you solved the problem.
Extra: In 2006 Hazel visited her mother for six weeks in the spring. In the summer Jonathan gave up drinking tea for six weeks. Their favorite tea costs $9.00 per pound. About how much did the couple spend on tea during the year? Explain.
