New spelling words given Monday  This is week 1 of the September words.

For parents: the basic homework schedule for homeroom is as follows:

  • Monday- Spelling
  • Tuesday- Math
  • Wednesday- Writing
  • Thursday - math and spelling test study
  • Every evening should include at least a half hour of sustained reading.

Writing homework: write a letter to Mr. Winship introducing yourself. Include information about your previous school, people in the family, and things you like to do. This is an introduction that may include things you are looking forward to and things you need help with, such as a school subject with which you have difficulty. This should be a half page to a full page in length.

Writing: Create the graphic novel of the story of how their family came to Canada. Pages may be downloaded from the sidebar on the left, or are available in the class. Please tell your story using the conventions discussed in class. Use establishing shots, text bubbles, author's voice and other techniques to tell the story effectively.

The criteria is listed below:

  • use graphic novel format
  • have at least 3 elements of dialog between characters. This might be 3 conversations where the characters take turns speaking.
  • tell the story of how your family came to Canada. This may be a story from long ago, or it may be recent. You will have to choose which elements to include and which to leave out.
  • Use a minimum of 2 graphic novel pages and a maximum of 4 graphic novel pages.
  • You may use the blank templates downloadable on the left, or you may choose to create your own boxes.
