Story writing samples due today.

Reading History textbooks for this weekend. Chapter one. Short jot-notes will be required.

Substitution Homework.

Due to the rain, I would prefer that the History texts do not go home today. We will substitute a reading assignment instead.

You have been given a "Smiley-Face" trick page. This page identifies some of the tricks writers use to engage an audience. To show how common these tricks are, you are asked to find them in books you have at home.

The Smiley-face trick sheet is to identify when a writer uses a technique to engage the reader. You will be using this to make your own writing rich and expressive.
This weekend, you need to find two books that use some of the techniques. You need not identify all of the techniques, nor do they need to be in a single book. Try to find at least two good examples of a technique; for example, the full circle ending might be found in a number of story books.
There are eight tricks, and some are easier to find than others.
Identify the technique and show where it is used in a book. Bring the book in, if possible. Failing that, at least write the title, author and section of the book, and copy the section down that shows the trick that was used.
